Add to the cake... MEDICINE!

Yesterday, in an attempt to fill my prescription, I visited a Walmart pharmacy. I updated my insurance, gave them my script and expected to pick up my prescription minutes later. Maybe it's me... but those were some high expectations.

I picked up the prescription, headed to a playdate to pass some time in the afternoon, ate a little and then took the medicine.

Within 30 minutes I was feeling less than well. (And let me let you know that the reason I got a prescription in the first place was that I was feeling less than well... so I suppose... I was just feeling- ummm... ICKY!!) I was dizzy, nauseous, and worst of all... my neurological system was extremely heightened. My hands were shaking, my muscles were weaker, and I knew this was most certainly medicine related.

I wondered why things were so bad for me after taking the medicine. My doctor specifically said that my IV meds worked so well he wanted to keep me in that class of meds since we know the side effects are limited and the sort.

After taking it for the second time 12 hours later I realized it didn't sit well with me. I woke up this morning sick, shakey, neurologically alert. UUGH.

So this morning I took my medicine bottle and looked up the side effects. CIPRO... the medicine I had been taking- is an antibiotic that causes neurological side effects and deep tendon pain. (ALL SYMPTOMS THAT PROMPTED MY DOCTOR TO PRESCRIBE AN ANTIBIOTIC IN THE FIRST PLACE) Can not be taken in conjuction with caffeine as it doesn't allow it to metabolize. It stops caffeine from breaking down and allows the neurological system to be heightened and over taxed. (Did I mention I had a grande soy latte and 3 venti unsweetened iced teas) LOVELY.

And then it hits me... I'm not even supposed to be on CIPRO. My doctor specifically said that I should be aking Ceftin. A drug with minimal side effects and certainly not with neurological concerns.

So I begin the phone calls to trace down the error. My Dr's office adamantly opposed my taking the Cipro and said it was not at all what they prescribed. They then called Walmart to find the problem. When the Dr. called back they told me to go my local Walmart and pick up the RIGHT prescription that they are willing to NOT CHARGE me for. (Uhhhh... WHAT?)

Four hours later, not only did I not have the right prescription in my hand, I couldn't even get Walmart to understand that they FILLED the prescription INCORRECTLY and needed to back track to the ORIGINAL SCRIPT to see that I was to have received Ceftin!!

Finally- I received a copy of my original script and the pharmacist at Walmart said he would put a rush on filling that for me. Nice of him yes... but I told him not to bother. I wasn't filling anything out there. I asked for a refund of my copay and a reversal of the script so my insurance wasn't billed. To which I was told No. (What? They mess up to this extent and then tell me they aren't going to refund my copay or not charge my insurance for my WRONG prescription.)

I end up going to Target to have it filled!! In talking to the higher ups at Walmart- they assured me that they were investigating this "incident" and I would hear back from their insurance department. My phone didn't ring yet.

I suppose this is the moral of the story... Don't go to Walmart. NOT FOR CAKE- and NOT FOR MEDICINE!!!

Wow! Praise the Lord you got it worked out. Service is really getting bad these days anywhere you go, isn't it?

LOVE THE MUSIC!

Chelle,

That story is pretty frightening. Praise God that it wasn't something wrongfully filled for your children. I can't help but think of that scene from 'It's A Wonderful Life' when Mr. Gower fills the wrong prescription. You'd like to think that we've come a long way since the 1930's wouldn't you?

Make sure to put your feet up and take it easy this weekend.

Love, WCY

That is terrible!! I'm with you on the Wal-Mart thing - I've gotten willing to pay a little extra at another store just to get human service!

I hope you are better now.

I had a similar reaction when I took this Rx a couple of years ago. When my husband called the Dr. office, they said they would get back with us...however, thankfully, he was having none of that! I know they have to deal with over-sensitive hypochondriacs, but I wish they would consider that some of us have better things to do than "complain" of fainting upon standing! :)
